1 Timothy 6:17-18

¹⁷As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. ¹⁸They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.

In some Christian circles, it is almost considered a shame to be rich; and in others, people follow the prosperity gospel, which teaches God promises us financial riches. Both are extremes of thought about earthly blessings. Wealth comes with the challenge to not trust in wealth but in God. It can also tend toward pride. Yet it can be a great blessing when the possessor humbly seeks God's will for the use of those funds. There is need all around us. The wealthy must use discernment to know how the Lord would have them distribute their wealth.

This verse has two sobering comments about the nature of wealth. It is wealth in this present age. It has no relationship with the world to come. And it is uncertain. Powers come and go and often take wealth with it. Someone is always seeking to con the wealthy out of their money (Proverbs 23:5).

The verse also has an encouraging comment for those of every financial status. We should place our hope on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. The best things in life are freely given to all: the beauty of nature, the love between husband and wife, the joy of children, watching the Lord move in our lives and in the lives of those we love, true friends, and so much more. Take time to enjoy and give thanks for all the good things God has richly given to us.

Comment: While the Christian life is often one of sacrifice, it is also one that deeply enjoys the goodness of God expressed through His rich gifts to us. Give God thanks for those priceless, loving gifts.
