1 Timothy 2:1-2

¹First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, ²for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

Governments created by humans will always fall far short of God's intentions; nevertheless, God has put them in place (Romans 13:1). Until the kingdom of God is established by Jesus on the earth, the kingdoms of man are a necessity. When they function as they should, they restrain evil by enforcing justice. Paul tells us to lift up prayers for them. Intercede on their behalf. The power that those in high office wield can corrupt them.

Pray that they have wisdom to make the right decisions for the sake of the people they serve. Make intercession for them that they not be corrupted by power. Ask God to give them right motives and to exercise justice. The more you dislike their ideology, they more you should be eager to pray for them to do what is right.

The reason that we pray like this is for their souls, but also so that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life. Decisions of rulers can add to national calm or stir it into turmoil. A quiet life gives one time to study the Word of God and to share the love of God with those he or she meets. A godly and dignified life is a testimony to everyone that witnesses it. In chaotic situations created by rulers who are a terror to their nation, the focus of the people turns from the quiet godly examples around them to ridding themselves of their ruler. Pray, so that the kingdom of God may be advanced by the quiet consistency of your godly life.

Consider: No matter how we feel about our leaders, it is in our own interest and that of the lost to lift them up in prayer.
