John 19:34

34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

According to Dr. Gary R. Habermas, there are three events in which the overwhelming majority of all Bible scholars are in agreement: (1) Jesus died on the cross. (2) His disciples believed He rose from death and (3) Jesus' enemies believed He rose from death. One of the most accepted arguments against resurrection used to explain all three of these facts is the swoon theory. Only a small percentage of scholars believe it is plausible. The theory suggests that Jesus did not die but was almost dead and revived after a short time in the tomb. One addition to this theory is that He was given a drug that caused Him to appear to be dead.

The problem with this theory is that full crucifixion always ended in death. In all of history only one person is reported to have survived a partial crucifixion. Soldiers could face the penalty of their prisoner if the prisoner escaped. That is why the legs were broken to assure that the person was indeed dead. Jesus was already dead. The experienced soldier made certain of this by thrusting a spear into His heart.

The vast majority of skeptical scholars have no other explanation for these three facts but will not accept the possibility of resurrection because they don't believe in the miraculous. Jesus conquered death! It was not possible for the grave to hold Him. He is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). When He promises to give us life, He has the power to do it!

Consider: The world had no answer for death. Let's share the answer we know is true so that they might know the joy of being free from bondage of the fear of death.
